You want to look like a cool cat, and your hair plays a big part in that. But over time, you may have developed habits that are actually harmful to your hair. Follow these five tips for a healthy, manageable mane…
Number 1. Pick the right shampoo – no chemicals, please.
Many commercial shampoos contain harsh chemicals that can damage hair over time. These chemicals strip away the natural oils in your hair. For better results, look for shampoos that are sulfate-free.
While gentler shampoos won’t get as foamy and bubbly, they are better for your hair in the long run.
Number 2. DO NOT wash your every day to keep the frizzies away.
This can be a tough one if you’re used to washing your hair every day. By now, your hair might have become accustomed to it. But the fact is, most people don’t need to wash their hair every single day.
Over-washing can strip your hair of its natural shine, and even exacerbate scalp issues, causing flaky skin. Try cutting back to every other day or two to three times a week. Your hair will adjust and regain its natural shine and health.
Number 3. Condition, condition, condition.
Conditioners protect hair and restore moisture, making hair more manageable. There are three types of conditioner…
- In-shower conditioners
- Leave-in conditioners
- Deep conditioners
In-shower conditioners are the most common and are usually paired with your shampoo. Leave-in conditioners are applied after showering and help make hair manageable for styling. Deep conditioners are helpful if your hair feels dry or rough, and can be used once every couple of weeks. Experiment to find out which conditioner, or combination of conditioner, is right for you!
Number 4. T-shirt dry, friends, t-shirt dry.
Most of us grew up using a towel on both our bodies and our heads. But the relatively rough fibers can damage wet hair. Instead, soak up extra water using a soft fabric for hair that’s less frizzy and more manageable.
Number 5. Cut back on heat styling and nobody gets hurt.
We all know that heat styling tools such as hair dryers, flat irons, and curling irons are sometimes necessary to get the look you want.
When possible, cut down on using these tools to reduce damage to your hair. When you do have to use a heat styling tool, use the lowest possible settings.
Before using a flat iron or curling iron, make sure your hair is completely dry. Whenever possible, let your hair air dry. Weekends at home are a great time to let your hair dry naturally!
Everyone’s hair is different, so make sure to experiment in order to to find what works best for you. These five tips are a great start toward looking like the cat’s meow.
