Our old superhero, hydrogen peroxide, is a tried-and-true first aid treatment, cleansing wounds and preventing infections in households across America. But hydrogen peroxide does even more great things – way more.
Of all the products in all the cabinets in your home, peroxide is worth every penny of the $1.49 you probably spent on it. Here are but six reasons why…
Reason No. 1: Sanitizes Hands and So Much More!
Hydrogen peroxide kills germs on your hands! Keep it in a spray bottle in a convenient location for a quick disinfect-job.
As mentioned in Consumer Reports, hydrogen peroxide can help deactivate common cold (rhinovirus) germs on surfaces in six to eight minutes. COVID-19 is actually less hearty than rhinovirus. Simply apply to a surface and let stand a minute or more. With clothing, HP can discolor, but not if you rinse. HP is also great for hard surfaces, it’s non-corrosive and can be left to dry as it breaks down on its own.
Reason No. 2: The Mouthwash That Brightens!
Out of mouth wash? Want brighter teeth? Gargling with a small amount of HP can help remove germs in your mouth, and brighten your smile. It’s no wonder hydrogen peroxide is listed as an ingredient in a lot of toothpastes. NOTE: We strongly recommend consulting your dentist on exactly how to do this properly!
Reason No. 3: Ouch No More
Hydrogen peroxide, combined with coconut oil in equal parts, is widely heralded as being able to kill a toothache. (Again, you may want to consult with your dentist about this.)
Did you know? Back in the 1950’s, inventors tried to use hydrogen peroxide as rocket fuel – the concept has cultivated interest to this day. As an example, in 2007, Germany’s Christian Stadler used HP-powered rockets made in Mexico (they still make them there) to reach speeds of over 150 mph at an international wingsuit competition he organized. Here’s a clip – amazing and amusing! Via .youtu.be
Reason No. 4: Hair, Skin and Feet – Oh My!
Add a bit of hydrogen peroxide to damp hair and leave it for 15 minutes before rinsing off. After a couple of applications your hair will be lightly highlighted. And while you’re waiting for your hair to absorb some of the HP, dab your face with a bit of it and clear up acne pimples and discolorations. But don’t stop there! Make your feet smooth and calluses softer by adding a half cup to your bathwater and soaking in it. It’s called multi-tasking, people!
Reason No. 5: Five “Germ-Killing Gone Wild” Uses
Soak your toothbrush for an hour – sanitize your wooden cutting boards – wipe down lunchboxes without worrying about chemicals left behind. The same goes for cleaning toys that may end up in a child’s mouth. Put a bit of HP into your humidifier to get rid of germs and molds.
Reason No. 6: Stain and Odor Fighter
Even stubborn stains can be rubbed out with a little help from HP by pouring it directly on fabric and letting it sit for a minute. Simply rinse out with cold water and repeat if necessary. Fabrics with bad smells from pets (and humans) can be sweetened with a soak combination of white vinegar and HP. After the soak, just toss in the regular wash.
But wait, there’s more!
Here’s a video from Natural Cures that explores even more reasons to keep hydrogen peroxide around the house. Stay clean and bright, friends!
